The construction of St Brigid’s started by parish priest, Fr Joy Dean in 1835 was completed by Fr Michael Dungan in 1863. Among the final additions were the installation of the chapel bell and the building of the Spire – one of the most distinctive features of our church. The cost was £ 308- 8-3d.( Beardswood and Sons Builders)
The unique design of the spire is attributed to Fr Joy Dean who is thought to have to have been influenced by Flemish cathedrals during his time on the continent.
There is a record of the costs involved in Fr Dungan’s Diary and in the Parish Accounts of this period. The pride of the people in their parish ensured that subscriptions/donations ranging from penny- a week collections to larger donations from wealthy parishioners ensured the completion of St Brigid’s and the erection of the Spire.
The cross from the Spire is now placed on the front wall of the church following storm damage caused by Storm Eoghan in 2024.
